Vegas Here We Come!
|
In this issue it is all about the manufacturers! We could not do this without them and for their commitment and loyalty we are eternally grateful. We have in depth interviews with two of our exhibitors and learn of their obstacles to reach where they are presently in life and with their companies. We asked all of them what attendees could look forward to seeing and hearing about in Vegas next week. In no particular order, this is what they had to say. Read on and let us know what you think editor@formaltimes.com

Malibu Tie Company
|

Sherry Koy owner of Malibu Tie Company tells a little about herself and her company’s origin.
A history of my company
Malibu Tie, Inc. started nearly 15 years ago. Part of the reason I began the business was because I saw the poor quality of zippered ties at the time and felt that I could design a better product. With the encouragement of family and friends, and financial support from my mother, I opened the company's doors on Sept 27, 1993. My siblings and my husband were particularly instrumental in helping me stay afloat, especially when times got rough.
When I started, we offered 30 print designs. As our customer base multiplied, our collection of prints expanded. In 2003, we met Jeff Shain from Friar Tux, who encouraged us to join the IFA. It was then that we started our new line: zippered ties in solid colors for the formal wear industry. We initially offered 20 colors, but as demand grew, we added more colors and new items, such as pocket squares, bow ties, and vests.
Products
We sell zippered ties, bow ties, vests, and pocket squares. Our products come in 87 colors.
Staff
We have a small but dedicated staff of 7 people.
Best selling items
Pocket squares are our most popular items.
Other items we sell besides what the formal wear industry requires
We also produce ties for uniforms worn by pilots of the top airlines in the US. These ties are made from fabrics different from those for formal wear.
What new colors or items are you offering?
We try to match our colors to what are offered by David's Bridal.
Website
You can find our Website at www.malibutie.com
Personal background
I came to the United States on Dec 1980, along with my mother, brothers, and sisters, and their family. We had left Cambodia at the height of the take-over of our country by the Communist regime the Khmer Rouge, which attempted to rebuild society through violence. Conditions were desperate at one of the labor camps where we were placed, so we decided to take our chances: we escaped and trekked through the jungles. Although we faced the prospects of being shot at, robbed, raped, or killed, we fortunately made it to the border unharmed, where we were taken in by a United Nations refugee camp. Once safely there, we began applying for asylum in whatever countries would take us. One of our letters eventually made its way to the White House, which resulted in our finding a sponsor. Within a year, we were in America. I went to school in Maryland and received my degree as a Computer Program Analyst. But for my elective classes I did take business management and accounting classes as much as I possibly could. I then moved to California with my mother for nicer weather and pursued a degree in Computer Science at California State University Fullerton for about 2 years. Once there, I chose to open Malibu Tie, and the rest is history.
I believe that the strong bond in my family is the fountain of the company's success. I feel blessed we've been able to endure. Not only that, we've been able to thrive, due to the steadfastness of our customers, the kindness of friends in the IFA, the support from Friar Tux, and the guidance from mentors. See you in Las Vegas.

Classix
|

Vahe Khachooni Vice President and part owner of Classix shirts offers information on how he has built his current business from 1 shirt to hundreds of thousands. Read on and get to know another of our manufacturers who support your industry.
Starting from 1976 I was involved with importing and distributing hundreds of different items from every corner of the world. I would travel to Italy and France for the latest shoes and fashions. I traveled to Korea for clothing and blankets. Also, Indonesia and Pakistan for T-Shirts and summer clothing. Korea was the best source at that time for dress shirts and tuxedo shirts. My Persian partner (who was much older than me) and I had a thriving business with a huge warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. Then we had the Los Angeles Race riots in 1991.
Our warehouse was totally emptied during the riot, not one item was left. Even the offices were either trashed or carried away. The blow to my partner was more than he could bear. This was the second time he had lost everything. First when he was in Iran, when Ayatollah Khomeini came into power and the government took everything. He had to flee the country on foot and horse back through the mountains at night. His health started to deteriorate after the riots and he eventually went into depression. He passed away a few years later from Alzheimer’s. I being much younger than him almost did nothing for about 6 month after the riots. Then I convinced myself that may be I can start again with only one item that was not fashion item and did not require excessive travel and could be dependent not to change every year.
I studied many sources, catalogues, magazines, etc. I found a Sears catalogue from 1899. It had Tuxedo shirts for sale! The shirt was exactly like our current Tuxedo shirts with only one difference, the collar. It was removable and was being sold separately. They washed them separately. Eureka! I had found my item. After studying the market and registering the name Classix I went to Korea and ordered my first two containers of tuxedo shirts. I could not find any space in Los Angeles that I could get Insurance coverage. I tried Palmdale/Lancaster and they were far enough from Los Angeles that I could get insurance. In May of 1994 Classix’s original two container's arrived and we have been in business since then. The first shirt style, our basic Tuxedo shirt M00 has not changed since. We still use the same factory the same fabric and same price. Over the years we added other styles and colors. Pink, Red etc.
I have been back to Korea many times since the riots, but not to find new items or to chase after new fashions simply to improve the quality of our existing line. Another decision I made from the beginning was to have the shirts in stock all the time. I ship even one shirt with the same care and attention as a multi thousand shirt order to the largest buyer in the country.
Our initial warehouse was 5,000 sq ft, we moved to larger space 10,000 sq ft in 2001 and to a 20,000 sq ff in 2006. Our commitment to having all the shirts all the time has been very effective in increasing our customer list from 0 in 1994 to over 5000 at the present. We have more than 280,000 ( two hundred eighty thousand) shirts in stock and receive one container every 3-4 weeks. Our steady growth has attracted loyal employees, which I am told by many customers are the best in the industry.
In 2005 we purchased Sharisma line of accessories, and moved the manufacturing to Lancaster California. This has been a very good investment and proved to be profitable. In the last month we have transferred our entire catalogue to CD and we will be distributing it during the IFA in Las Vegas.
In 2006 we built our Web site CLASSIXSHIRTS.COM which has become a very effective tool when ordering cuff links and other pieces where color and detail are needed. We do not give prices or sell on line unless we verify that they are a bonified tuxedo operation or men's store not someone trying to beat the local Tux store out of their few $'s of profit. Many of our orders are processed online but we do not sell directly to the public.
English is not my second but third language, after Armenian and Persian. I also speak a little Turkish. I immigrated (legally) to the United States in 1960 and have lived here ever since. I have been married for 46 years to Muriel Craig and have two daughters and one son and three grandchildren.
Stop by our booth in Las Vegas.
Fabian Couture Spring 2009 Collection

Joseph Abboud Black Tie
The premium brand of rental formal enters it’s third season continuing to carry over the styles that made it famous…The Waldorf 2B Notch, The Carlyle framed Peak, The Chelsea faille Peak, The Stanhope and The Gramercy faille notch.
Brand new for 2009 are the Madison, an extremely elegant 2B notch that is trimmed on the inside label edge with satin. It suggests a hint of a silk scarf worn under a black suit, but it’s a tuxedo all the way. Simply stunning Joining the Madison for Spring 2009 is our first new shawl in quite a while…The Dakota…it’s Sinatra, Martin, and Clooney and is perfect for a Las Vegas debut!
The line is complimented by 2 brand new vest programs…The Hampton and The Lexington…and a new tie program for our existing faille vest program, The Marquee.
Perry Ellis

The buzz surrounding Perry Ellis is it’s revolutionary new “Comfort-fit stretch armhole”*, combined in it’s second season with new high fashion styles like The Virgo … a unique “shadow pleat” label, The Marsaille…a inset satin peak,
and the Virgo, a high fashion diamond lapel tuxedo. Our Comfort Fit armhole proved it’s worth in spades last season by decreasing the number exchanges caused by fitting issues. Be sure to see it and try it on for yourself in Las Vegas.
Two new vest programs round out the Ellis program….The Cabanana…a “lace over satin” design inspired directly by the bridal market, and The San Palo…a “raindrop” pattern in the 36 new bridal colors.

Thoughts for the Week Ahead
Have you ever lost something only to find it later? The rush of relief heightens our awareness of the value of that something greatly! Is their something in your life you could be taking for granted today? What will tomorrow bring?
No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
Aesop
Previously we published a poem titled, "The Dash", without crediting the author. We recently learned that the poem was written by Linda Ellis of Linda's Lyrics, www.lindaellis.net. Ms. Ellis owns and has registered the copyright to her poem.
