Shirt Wars

In the past 8-10 years our industry has been undergoing massive changes through consolidation. Our options in manufacturers to purchase goods have changed along with the number of companies who now rent them. Change leads to change and our most recent After Six/Chaplin/Ascot merger has changed the face of shirt sales again.

We have an industry constant in Classix. Their policy to maintain price, quality, and most importantly inventory has not changed. With their biggest competitor Chaplin being absorbed by After Six it remains to be seen how or if they will be affected with the poly cotton market as FCGI works to be a stronger competitor there along with After Six’s influence.

Microfibre shirts are another story altogether. AscottLLC and CSS Chaplin went head to head on the microfiber shirt front all along. With the merging of the companies they effectively eliminated their own greatest competition. Haven’t they? We have an old friend offering a new product to our industry. BlackGold who has offered accessories to the industry for years are now in the shirt business.

Both companies sent out press releases in the past weeks and they are below as sent. I asked each if they would like to add any further comment and they are also with the releases. Read on and let us know what you think editor@formaltimes.com.

After Six Announcement

To All Our Friends in the Formalwear, Menswear, and Hospitality Industries:
We are pleased to announce that the After Six sales team is now receiving their Luxe Microfiber® shirt samples and updated materials this week. As the new manager of the After Six shirt division, I am proud and excited to stand behind this team of seasoned professionals who will bring you the same high quality Luxe Microfiber® shirts you have come to expect from Ascot LLC.

As you probably know, Ascot LLC, the industry’s leader in microfiber shirts, was recently purchased by After Six LLC. As a result, you can be confident that After Six has also bought and maintained the exclusive rights to the Luxe Microfiber® trademark. Any attempt by any company or organization to say that we do not have Luxe Microfiber® shirts or the exclusive right to sell and distribute Luxe Microfiber® shirts is completely false and a brash misrepresentation of the facts.

You can be confident that After Six will continue to use the same high quality fabric used by Ascot LLC in their production of Luxe Microfiber® shirts. To allay any concern, a letter received on September 2, 2009 from the president and owner of our Korean source confirms that they are “pleased to continue to supply you [After Six] with the same Luxe Microfiber® fabrics we had supplied to Ascot LLC.”

You can be confident that After Six has—today—the depth of inventory required to support your needs with 68,000 Luxe Microfiber® shirts currently in-stock, representing 38 styles and colors—in plain fronts, pleats, and stripes—and averaging 52 sku’s per style.

You can be confident that After Six is IN the shirt business, not just wanting to be. After Six has the shirt fabric, shirt experience, corporate backing and professional sales team dedicated to provide you the very best in product, delivery, and customer satisfaction.

We are excited about what lies ahead in the 2010 season. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or your sales representative. We look forward to a continued, successful future together.

After Six Adds to this announcement:

To our Formalwear Friends,

A quick update on After Six Luxe Microfiber® shirts.

• After Six will continue to use the exact same fabric that was used by Ascot LLC for their production of Luxe Microfiber® shirts.

• After Six is now working directly with the owner-agent who represents the Korean fabric millthe same Korean fabric millthat produced Luxe Microfiber® for the past nine years. We have now eliminated the prior need for a middle agent.

• In the next few weeks Sam Kim, CEO of After Six, will be visiting the Korean fabric mill and the production facility in China that has been producing shirts for the formalwear industry the past three years. After Six Luxe Microfiber® shirts will be made identical to the shirts that were produced by Ascot LLC.

• Substantial piece goods orders for Luxe Microfiber® fabrics have been placed by After Six for "at-once" delivery to replenish any holes in our existing inventory and to service early spring deliveries.

• After Six is now offering an exceptional early booking price for Luxe Microfiber® shirts to help you save on your advance spring orders. This is a time sensitive offer. For more details call your sales representative or customer service at 1-800-554-8212.

Sincerely,

BlackGold Announcement

Contact: Doug Black
Jon Goldman
BlackGold wants all specialists to be fully aware of what has happened with the production of the Luxe Microfiber® rental shirts as of September 1, 2009.

After Six, through its asset purchase of Ascot LLC, has acquired the trademark name of Luxe Microfiber®. What they have not acquired is the fabric or the factory that has been manufacturing these shirts for the past 7 years.

BlackGold has signed an exclusive agreement with El Primero (the DR factory) and its’ owners to be the sole distributor of this specific microfiber shirt to customers in the United States and Canada. (See attached Letter). These shirts will not carry the Luxe Microfiber® label as that is the property of After Six.

After Six bought approximately 5,600 dozen shirts as part of its asset purchase from Ascot LLC. This inventory includes retail and rental shirts in current and non-current styles and colors. It does include some inventory of plain and pleated Microfiber shirts with country of origin labels “Made in Dominican Republic”.

BlackGold has been assured in writing by the fabric supplier as well as the DR factory
that the only fabric that will exactly match the color and quality of the shirts shipped the
last 7 years will be the microfiber shirts being supplied by BlackGold.

As soon as After Six ships its on-hand inventory of Luxe Microfiber® shirts, their
replenishment will come from a factory other than El Primero in the Dominican Republic.

The fabric used to manufacture those shirts might have a Luxe Microfiber® label but will
not have been manufactured with the same fabric and in the same facility as the specialists have been receiving for the last 7 years.

This shirt opportunity is a natural extension for BlackGold: A better product produced from the finest fabric and highest quality of production. BlackGold will be the only company going forward using the same microfiber fabric made in the same DR factory as you currently have in your inventories.

We stand by our announcement and will not comment any further as to the validity of claims made by After Six.

Note: The term “Luxe Microfiber®” is a registered trademark of After Six

BlackGold would only like to add the following:
We are proud to be in the shirt business and will provide the exact consistency of fabric & mnfg that you have had for years. Please test these to prove our word.

One of the things we can do for each other as members of this organization is pass along ideas and successes to our fellow members. We have a unique opportunity to not only help ourselves, but the industry as a whole to promote the success of small businesses across the country and world through this type of exchange. Dennis Schmidt of Milroy’s Tuxedo and Wholesale Waterloo Iowa has chosen to share another of his great ideas that may work for you. Read on and let us know what you think editor@formaltimes.com

New for Milroy’s Tuxedos

Authentic Halloween Costume Rentals – We have already had a strong reaction with customers and its definitely creating a Buzz with our staff with Halloween Costume Rentals! I have always believed the WOW effect in our stores and with Halloween being on Saturday; we should be looking at a great weekend! Now we can include women with the new Flapper Rentals. This will definitely increase all the rest of my rentals; Zoot Suits, Zoot Tux’s, Dumb & Dumber Outfits in 6 Colors, Frank Sinatra, and more. I am always looking for new ideas for new income and nothing better in doing so with creating Fun for my employees & customers!

It is said we have a new player about to enter the tuxedo rental arena, Joseph A. Banks.  The company is based out of Hampsted MD and operates 467 stores across the country. They have plans to open 30 to 40 stores in the next year. 350 stores have been opened in the past decade and they intend to own 600 in the future. This company posts 2nd quarter net income advances of 41.1%. When many operations are faltering in a tough economy they have not only done well this quarter they have achieved earnings growth in 31 of out of 32 quarters with this being the 13th quarter in a row to achieve that growth. Neal Black current CEO was quoted in WWD in response to a direct question on the rumor: “We have several growth initiatives under investigation for 2010 and beyond. We have always had an interest in all aspects of the formalwear business and we have a significant business in tuxedo sales. We have not made any announcement about tuxedo rentals, but if we were to do so, it would be with a full and complete understanding of the competitive market.” Do you have one in your market?

In Men’s Wearhouse news, 2nd quarter profits rose more than 20% despite a decline in sales. In addition to aggressive sales, a double digit reduction in expenses helped increase the profit margin. On the tuxedo rental side George Zimmer was quoted as saying “although wedding rentals are soft, if not slightly down year-over-year the company’s sales in this division rose 1.7% indicating they are gaining market share albeit at a slower rate than tailored clothing.
