Post Convention Edition Convention is done, what did you miss?? Read a recap of events and see a few of the pictures taken during the event. The IFA announces its regional show schedule. Read about Black Gold’s new entrance into the microfiber shirt business. Wants and offerings and more. Let us know what you think editor@formaltimes.com
Timeline of Convention Events
Expo 28 was considered a great success! Even with all of the industry mergers, 1 more booth was sold this year than last! The association owes a great deal of gratitude to sponsors who stepped up and helped provide support in so many ways. If your stores were busy, and you were unable to attend the Expo this past week here is a recap of events.
The Expo began Thursday morning with a dynamic new speaker for our organization Arnie Capitanelli. His presentation Every Customer Counts was eye opening and direct. The festive night life of the city usually leads to poor attendance for early morning seminars, but attendance was substantial. Mr Capitanelli’s background in the industry with After Hours and beyond brought the touch of familiarity with a dynamic approach to inspire. One of his comments on why would smaller independent operators want to listen to a guy who helped train and motivate employees of our biggest competitor made me pause, when the answer was “Why wouldn’t you?” Who better to relate the customer service model for any size operator when every customer counts? Be sure to watch for future articles from Mr. Capitanelli on The Retail Street Fight!

Next, the Membership meeting a formality for the association was conducted. New board members were nominated and approved. Board members are elected for three year terms, at the end of that term they have the option to step down or continue in what they call the chairs. The chairs consist of secretary, first vice president, vice president and president. We had two members whose terms were complete leaving open positions. Our newest board members nominated and confirmed are Gage Walker of Tuxedo Resale in Chula Vista California and Keith Ladsten of Tip Top Tux Sioux City Iowa. More on their extensive backgrounds in the industry will be offered in upcoming issues.

Next, was the transfer of the roll of president from Rod Benbrook who has volunteered his time for the past two years to Ken Pendley. Rod Benbrook has done an outstanding job for the organization in tough times and we thank him greatly for his service! Mr. Pendley also has been an integral part in the transition away from Smith Bucklin to self management of the organization, and we will have a full profile on the new president in a future edition.
The show floor opened at 10am on Thursday morning to a good crowd.

After the floor closed from a busy day on Thursday, it was time for our industry award reception. To see everyone dressed to be noticed in the black tie fashion that earns a living for us all is such a treat. To see the tuxedo style choices of men who have many options is very interesting. Take a look at a few and see what you think??
The reception was an opportunity to honor our award winners, voted on by their peers:
FCGI won for best new accessory the “Berkley” by Joseph Abboud, and the best new tuxedo the “El Rey”
by After Six. These are voted on during the first day, first impression by people walking the floor. We will have more about them in a future issue.
The next two awards are nominated by members and the votes tallied to salute the tops in each their respective fields
Manufacturer of the Year! Larr Brio Voted on by store owners and their employees as a model for product service and design for the consumer.
Retailer of the Year was presented to American Commodore headquartered in South Euclid Ohio. Frank Simmoni Jr accepted the award chosen by manufacturers who nominate thebest run tuxedo operations throughout the country.
Congratulations to these winners, for the honor of being chosen by your peers we salute you!
These are a few of the suppliers who coming to convention gives you opportunity to see what they have to offer. We will feature more in our next edition.

Our most prestigious lifetime achievement honor went to Ron Klinger. His dedication to the success and promotion of our industry through the years has not gone unnoticed!

The second day of the show was started off by a lifetime friend of our industry Bob Barry. His seminar “55 Years with 55 Ideas for Tux Profit” was filled with tried and true ideas that 55 years in the business of helping small and large organizations succeed provides. Mr. Barry along with another long time friend of the industry Mark Burke formally of Mr Neat CO added his expertise to the program.
The show floor was open from 9-4 on Friday with steady traffic. We have such a great list of vendors who attended many for the first time. Smaller regional shows do not give you the opportunity to see some of the smaller vendors. We will be showcasing them in the coming editions. Thank you to all of them who were at the show, we couldn't do it without YOU!!
