January 22, 2009 - Welcome Back to Formal Times!

This Edition of the newsletter focuses on information. News about bridal shows across the country, information about the recent IFA board meeting, industry news, wants and offerings and more. Read on please let us know what you think editor@formaltimes.com

Does recession cause a surge of engagements?

Well, research released recently certainly seems to think so. The Office for National Statistics has found the national marriage rate actually increases around periods of recession with the biggest surge being during 1940, with 470,549 marriages recorded which coincided with the early days of WWII and the depression.

As people are staying at home more, the survey finds, "couples are spending more time together and relationships are developing more quickly, accelerating to the point of engagement." Let’s hope for a set of wonderful 2009 weddings then!

Bookings across the Country

We emailed operators across the country to see what they are seeing for turnout at the bridal shows, and what the brides are saying. Here are a few of the responses.
We are seeing mixed results in our area; major metropolitan markets have seen a decline in the average attendance, but very engaged attendees, while our wholesale markets in out state areas are seeing strong attendance and interest on the part of the consumer. Weather and the NFL Playoffs have played a role on one of our larger shows. We remain optimistic that ’09 will be a good year!
Good Luck!

We have had 2 very successful bridal shows! The brides that attended were
excited as usual about their upcoming wedding. We did notice that the number of
weddings has drastically lowered. Instead of 300 brides at a show, we're now
looking at 150-200 brides at the same show. On a positive note, the number of
attendants in the wedding seems to be coming up from previous years at 5-7 to
this year at 8-10. I believe we will see an influx in late season weddings as
the economy becomes stronger.

Green Bay’s big wedding show was Friday evening Jan 9th & Saturday, Jan 10th …considering the uncertain economic times we’re in, we are encouraged and excited to report that we saw a lot of brides! The show was busy with around 900 - 1000 brides (we didn’t get the exact count yet) however we talked with around 760 of them of which 65% are getting married in 2009. Last year 67% were getting married in 2008 … so the numbers are around the same. This show typically averages 1000 to 1200 brides. It was a great show! We’re in the process of doing around 30 shows right now between wholesale and retail so we will have much better information for you in a couple of weeks … so far so good though!

Our sales representatives have worked many shows in various regions of the country over the past couple of weeks. It appears that traffic at these shows has been better than last year. At this time, bookings are not following this trend.

Let me say that we have participated in several shows and 20% down seems to be the decline at the gate. We still have a few more shows coming up that we participate in and the problem there is not getting the brides but getting the vendors. Hard to say what the turn out will be, but my guess is we should not expect anything great.

Our local bridal shows have just begun.... the first large one in Grand Rapids is promoted by a competing tux shop and I am not invited to attend. The other large show I will participate in is this weekend, then another on Feb. 7th.

As a rule, the shows generate a fairly good crowd, but many of these brides have yet to even set a date in 2009. Lots of eager brides with dates as far out as 2011 doing information gathering. I always book enough weddings to cover the cost of the show and then some...it's nice exposure, but you need to be diligent about follow up on the lead list to really make these worthwhile.

Only one MAJOR show so far for `09. Vendor participation was off by at least a third as compared to `08. The number of brides was significantly less as well but strangely our "bookings" were up more than double of `08. The only thing we can attribute this increase to is that our staff had much more time to spend with each bride (and groom) than in the past. Store traffic from the show was considerable on Monday following the Sunday event which would seem to support the time spent per bride at the show.

Amazingly bookings are up from a year ago. Some businesses around us are closing like a Circuit City that just opened two months ago, but we are doing ok and booking for Mardi Gras. One school relaxed their dress code to shirt and tie to a winter formal that may cost me 50 rentals, but the others have not followed suit.

Sal Saputo

The reports I am hearing from around the country have been somewhat mixed, but primarily upbeat. Seems there are a lot of brides and interest, but weddings are smaller in number of attendants, and scaled down in dollars. The other part of the equation is that a significant number of tuxedo rental departments (like in bridal and related operations) and tuxedo rental shops are gone, leaving a larger slice of the business for the ones still open.

The show in DeKalb had about the same turnout as last year. We gave out about 150 brochures had a good response from those we spoke with so we just have to wait and see how many come in and book.

Although the bridal show is a lot of work it is worth it. The expo is exciting to the new brides and grooms, especially those in the first stage of wedding planning and due to that contact we see many of them in our store in the following months.

Milroy’s has been involved in 20 shows thus far this season in IA, IL, MO, and KS. All of the shows were upbeat and well attended. No negative comments on the economy or scaling back wedding sizes were heard. The talk was all about color color color! They want what matches their dresses! New colors from David’s that the girls were asking for were Mermaid, Saffron and Tangerine. The non David’s girls were all over the spectrum in Royal, Apple, Teal, and dark purple to name a few. The Iowa shows still showed great interest in brown tuxes for fall bookings. Overall a very positive outlook. In the retail locations a spike of bookings right after the first was seen as usual.

Winter Board Meeting

Chicago IL in the deep freeze of winter was the setting of the recent IFA winter board meeting. Chicago winters are known to be brutal, but negative temps and vicious winds cut to the bone last week. Horrible weather or not, every January the board of directors meets to go over details for the coming year. The plans are laid for the convention, regional shows, and promotional ideas. The amount of effort, passion for the industry, and even personal expense it takes to bring all of those together is surprising to witness.

As the editor of the newsletter I was included in the meeting and it occurred to me that some people like myself may have a great curiosity as to what these guys do and why! The board of directors is made up a group of volunteers. They are from all over the country involved in the formal wear industry as specialists, wholesalers, consultants, and manufacturers. This group is made up of people whose businesses must continue to run in their absence. One member flew in just for the day due to commitments in his business! The pledge to serve on the board includes the guarantee to attend at least 2 of the 3 meetings per year. Each board member is responsible for their own expenses to attend the meeting, including transportation, meals, and lodging.

The meeting was held all day last Tuesday from 10-6. The board members present were:

President: Rod Benbrook from Portland OR
First Vice President: Ken Pendley from CSS Chaplin, Denver CO
Secretary Treasurer: Chris Brown from Tuxedo Fashions, San Jose CA
Past President Wayne Griner from Daytona Beach FL
Manufacturer Board Member Doug Black from Black Gold, New York NY
Manufacturer Board Member Chuck Fields H. Field & Sons, Chicago IL
Board Member Dennis Schmidt from Milroy’s, Waterloo IA
Board Member Steve Davis from Jim’s FW, Trenton IL
Board Member Diane Peters from Ducky’s, Galesburg IL
Second Vice President Tom Deitte from Edith’s, Fond Du Lac WI
Board Member Sam Carlson from Black Tie, Oaklawn IL

Putting together the self management team last year when the organization left Smith Bucklin was a monumental task for the board. Some of the first things the board did to pull themselves up and dust themselves off was to assemble a team of people who like themselves had the best interest of the organization at heart. This organization was formed to promote formalwear and unite the people who earn a living in the industry. The board screened and found independent businessmen to fill the roles Smith Bucklin had played in the past. Steve Burger CPA was hired for accounting. Also, Brian Glasgow of William T. Glasgow trade show event planning was hired to execute the expo plans. Both of these gentlemen have a great interest in the success of the organization, and were present at the meeting, to give their input on upcoming events.

The agenda of the meeting:
Welcome
Approval of Minutes
Financials with Steve Burger CPA
Regional Shows: Results, locations, financials
Committee Reports: Membership
Convention 2009 with report from Brian Glasgow
Public Relations
Nominating
IFA Mission and Purpose
Succession
Review of goals and timeframe assignments

Each point in the agenda involved detail discussion on past and future goals. As all the points were covered throughout the day, the overwhelming consensus was onward and upward and how can I help? All the flowery praise still would go nowhere without a plan of action. Plans were set forth for upcoming regional shows, website changes, and especially the Expo. I will tell you that last years hotel rate at the Hilton in Vegas was the lowest ever for an IFA expo. Well, this year is going to be even BETTER!

Plans will continue to unfold in the weeks ahead. We promise to keep you informed! Please know everyone of the board members welcome your thoughts and invite you to contact them with any questions or requests. One of the topics on the agenda was nominating and the board was fielding names of potential future members. Would you be willing or know someone you would like to see representing the industry? The board members would greatly welcome your input or you can email us here and we will pass it along! editor@formaltimes.com

Hollywood’s Golden Glamour
Hollywood stepped out recently at the 66th annual Golden Globe awards in very traditional style. The more classic white shirt and bow tie on many of Hollywood’s leading men was a refreshing change from the open collars of the past. Ashton, Brad, Mario, Tom, Jon Voight and Buzz Aldrin, Diddy, Steven Spielberg, and more a few fine examples:

*** PRESS RELEASE ***
ATLANTA, GA – January 5, 2009

Frederico Leone LTD. has announced Brian Sharp as the company’s Director of Marketing. Sharp, son of the company’s owner, Greg Sharp, adds a new generation to Frederico Leone LTD. Today it is very unusual for a company to secure it’s future this early on which gives this company a competitive edge.

Previously Sharp was with the Alabama Press Association handling print placements for clients throughout the United States. Prior to his position at APA, Sharp worked in advertising for Comcast Spotlight and Crawford Broadcasting.

Sharp, a native of Florence, Alabama, earned his B.A. in Public Relations at the University of Alabama. When contacted, Sharp said “I am very excited with the growth opportunities we have at Frederico Leone LTD. All of the resources and the professional, knowledgeable staff gives us a solid base to build on. Frederico Leone already enjoys a reputation for excellent service and quality, now we can move forward with better communication with our customers and by promoting our products in a broader spectrum of venues.”

Sharp grew up in the menswear industry working as the third generation at Shanky’s Men’s Wear, a northwest Alabama clothing store. Being immersed in the sales/service industry at a young age has given Sharp a unique perspective on meeting customers’ needs and expectations.

Thoughts for the Week
In honor of the Inauguration a couple of political quotes!

John F. Kennedy: Quotes: “All of this will not be finished in the first one hundred days, nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.”

Abraham Lincoln: “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength To Love, 1963: “Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.”
