November 15, 2009 Edition

November. As the traditional busy season wears down for most, in this issue we ask what are your bored employees doing when you are not there? Also, we describe a free program that has been sweeping across the country to save brick and mortar businesses all over the world, and ask for your help to assist a fellow member on wording of a rental contract, industry news, wants and offerings and more…..

Your Rental Contract

We have a request from a member on the wording of your rental contract, damage wavier, and late fee policy. How did you come up with the wording choice? Have you had a lawyer look at what you use? Would you be willing to share what you use????

Jerry and Janet Klein of A Better Deal in LaJolla CA need advice from other members. They have not had a damage wavier option in the past and know IT IS TIME! What do you charge? Is it optional or forced? They choose to continue to use a handwritten form as many of us smaller operations do, and are looking for your input.  Please take the time to help a fellow member. Send information to editor@formaltimes.com or directly to the store:

Working to Save Your World Around You

Our membership is made up of all size operators, but the majority is small businesses. Everyone recognizes the importance of the small business in economic recovery. Free competitive enterprise strengthens and maintains our economy. Small businesses create most of the nation’s new jobs; employ about half of the nation’s private sector work force and a significant share of innovations and opportunities to better our world. This country is definitely built by this type of enterprise one brick at a time….

Do you have a business in your hometown like this you would like to see succeed? A grassroots program to support the bricks and mortar businesses large and small all across the country was launched last spring with a great pay it forward mentality. The 3/50 project was formed by Cinda Baxter a retail consultant and professional speaker whose mission it is to strengthen independent brick and mortar businesses. She owned a thriving retail store for 14 years and understands the necessity of successful business persons to share all the hard earned expertise and knowledge working all aspects of a business creates.

Her concept is simple: Pick three independent businesses in your town you would like to see succeed. Stop by them throughout the month and tell them you have chosen them as a business you would like to see succeed. Commit to spend at least $50 split between the three each month. This is simple, yet lasting when the concept is picked up by 100’s and 1000’s in your town. Do you have to split only the $50 between them? By all means NO spend as much as you like! Just commit to supporting them monthly for the long term. A few dollars spent goes a long ways in jobs, taxes paid by the business, and money spent again and again in your own community.

The holiday season fast approaches and it is the perfect time to make your feelings known to businesses of your choice. Be sure and explain the concept to them and encourage them to register for the free materials online that support and explain the idea to vendors and customers alike.

Spend some time visiting the website www.the350project.net and pay it forward to your town while working to save the brick and mortar stores that make up this country.

Off Season Creativity

With the off season for most of us already here, what are ways to maximize the talents of employees with less customers to service? Does it frighten you to think about your staff, blogging, watching TV, talking, texting, or maybe napping while on your payroll? The slower season requires greater attention on a manager or owners part to assure they are still getting productive hours. As the volume in traffic decreases, the customer service demands lessen for your staff in the front of the store.

What are your plans to continue to receive productive return for your investment in the payroll dollar?

Is their a plan in effect for working the phones?

Have you asked them to help design your next direct mail pieces?

Have you (completely) redressed the mannequins lately?

Vacuumed every corner of everywhere?

Asked them for a plan on how they would rearrange the showrooms for renewed interest in different styles given the opportunity?

Make follow up contacts from past weddings asking for referrals or possibly selling gown preservation?

Tapped into the many young creative minds and asked them to look at possible updates to your website or for their help in setting up a Facebook page for your store for prom?

Tallied up customer surveys and discussed with the employees ways to improve upon your way of doing things?

Have them walk in the front door of your store with a customer’s perspective for your offerings and let them see how different things look if it is the first time you set foot inside a business

Look up, down and behind for dust cobwebs and signs of neglect and ask for their help in seeing what needs updated

Have staff go inside each dressing room and close the doors to see what customers see do they need attention?

Take the path to the restrooms and evaluated both the route and the destination?

Asked your employees what they would change if it were their business?

Went through all registered weddings and sent them an email selling groomsmen gifts, garters, bridal favors etc etc etc….?

In stock locations have an advantage to keep staff busy by going through stock with a fine tooth comb and make sure your standards are clear to those checking on what to watch for..

Ask for ideas on what new customer service perk could be implemented now for all of the brides who will be visiting soon?

Have the staff work through all of the different options available in vest and tie combinations, sometimes the hottest new look is in their imagination?

Have all of your staff tell you from your newest to oldest employees what they would choose for a wedding they were in charge of planning and why?

Have all of the staff individually visit a competitor and find something they do better than you..

Have all of the staff individually visit a competitor and find 5 things you do better than them.

Ask your staff to tell you what they love most about their job?

Ask your staff what they would do to make work a better place?

Many store owners have their greatest idea machines right on their payroll ask them what they would do. Keep asking different employees the same questions for varying opinions. A fresh new approach to an old situation may already be on your payroll????
