Colors to Have

Last issue we looked at what David’s was offering for new colors and this site on The Knot plays right into the color trends that they are steering girls towards. Take the time to check out the combos and formulate what you have in your inventory to work with the options

Are we seeing an economic rebound?

In the final weeks of 2009 some retailers enjoyed a real boost. Consumers streamed through their doors and actually spent money. No, it wasn't a tidal wave of customers, but it was far better than retailers experienced in the final weeks of the previous year. With effective inventory management and improved pricing strategies, there were retailers who even saw bottom-line profits.

Although high unemployment and other economic issues persist, it is likely retailers will see positive sales numbers in the coming months. The National Retail Federation predicts a sales increase of 2.5 percent for 2010, markedly better than the dismal 2.5 percent sales decline in 2009.

WHO WILL BENEFIT?
The question is, which retailers will get the most benefit from these expected small improvements in the economy and consumer spending? I believe the retailers who will benefit most are those who stop trying to protect their businesses from the downturn and adopt a more aggressive approach to advertising and promoting their stores and the merchandise they sell.

For the past 18 to 24 months, a good many retailers have been in a "hunkering down" mode, cutting back on their advertising, marketing, and special events--simply trying to weather the storm. Two things have driven retailers to this way of thinking since the start of the recession. First, in many retail specialties fewer competitors exist as a result of store closures and bankruptcies during this period. This means some categories of specialty retailing have become at least a little less competitive. Second, retailers have learned they cannot profitably operate their businesses on discounts of 50% to 70% off and more.

With modest sales growth expected this year, savvy retailers will go after the business with everything they have in their arsenal of marketing and promotional tools. Those retailers who continue to be overly cautious when it comes to marketing will not attract enough customers to take advantage of the opportunities in 2010.

Retailers who expect to grow their businesses in 2010 must not be timid. They should be willing and able to try new things and make changes in what they did in the past to attract customers. The so-called "tried and true" ways of advertising and marketing very likely won't work as they did just a couple of years ago.

February 8, 2010 Edition

Bridal Show Season! This part of our lives as formalwear professionals always make you wonder if it is really worth it?? Read what operators across the country are saying about turnout etc.. What colors does The Knot say we should be ready for? How is business in the south for Mardi Gras? A great list with many new additions in the Wants and Offerings. Read about this and a lot more, and let us know how things are in your part of the world editor@formaltimes.com.

Bridal Show Reports
Hauling all of the paraphernalia in, setting up, finding the right giveaway, working the show with the right enthusiasm, then tearing it all down hauling it out and putting the store back together are all part of the work and forethought necessary for a successful show. If just reading this makes you tired you love these shows as much as the rest of us! This time of year is one of those necessary evils for all of us in the tuxedo rental trade. I asked a few of our members about show attendance in their area, what the “big guys” were up to, and about bookings here are the answers.

1. Black Tie Chicagoland has 40 shows they will participate in before the season is over! We have a show this weekend and 2 more in February, 1 in March and 3 in May yet. Attendance has been good, but a lot of duplication with the number of shows displayed.

2. Attendance has been very good at the shows so far ! No big deals as far other than a low introductory price . Our bookings have been great this month ! The bridal shop next door said that they haven’t seen this much traffic in years !!! We’ll see how it plays out !

3. We are a wholesaler and do not do any Bridal Shows ourselves. So, I don't know have any information to share with you about the attendance.

It has come to my attention that Men's Wearhouse is now giving the groom a choice of a free tuxedo rental or a free suit. The Groom would have to pay for his rental if he chooses the free suit.

We do operate a retail store in the front end of our wearhouse and I can report that last year we registered 15 weddings in January. This year we registered 31 weddings in January. We get most of our referrals from word of mouth and from Yelp as we have 20+ 5 star reviews.
Check them out @ www.yelp.com  under tuxedos in San Jose CA. (Tuxedo Fashions).

Hope this helps,

4. We just had our last Handley Bridal Show at the Interstate Center. Very happy with the attendance. We offered the groom and father of the bride a free tux with six paid. We were able to book 18 weddings. So far we are up 19 weddings and 144 tuxedos booked in January 2010 over January 2009. We ended 2009 up 10% in sales over 2008.

Hope this helps.

5. We have participated in a number of shows across the upper Midwest. The traffic has been consistent with last, maybe even a little softer, in some cases. However, we are seeing a great many more brides for 2010 and talking with brides that seem to have a sincere interest in doing business. So we are very encouraged by that. The “Big Boys”? MW is promoting their Free Suit Giveaway which is a notable offer, but one that we feel we can confidentially compete with. The other big boy (JAB) hasn’t come on the scene in the upper Midwest. Registrations have been solid – due to the “deep freeze in the northern tundra,” the week following Christmas was slower than normal. However, we have been posting marked increases in registrations every week since. 2009 started strong for us and withered as the year rolled on. At this point, we remain cautiously optimistic that we will be able to put together two good halves – making 2010 a better year than her predecessor.
That’s the latest from Minnesota.

6. Bookings are way done here in Visalia, bridal show attendance seems to be about the same but sooner to the wedding date not as many early planners ie years in advance. The big dogs in our town for the show were allowing bridesmaides at the show to try on clearance dresses. And mens warehouse was advertising register today get some 10-15% off which is nothing at their rediculous prices. Hope that helps.

7. Wedding Shows: Funny, when the letter from our big regional show director revealed attendance at this year's Jan- 2010 show was up by 10% we were pleased to have so many leads, even though it seemed like we didn't see as many brides at the show. Well, when we saw the lead list, it was like this:
2009 brides: 10
2010 brides: 600
2011 brides: 300
2012+ brides: 200
No date yet: 200
3 brides had same last name, same address, but different first names. (mother+ sister+ bride?)
Same as above many times with 2 names.
Saw about 100 groom's names on the list (who attended with their bride).
Multiple dupes... etc.

So,,,, by the time we sorted it all out, we guesstimated about 10% less brides than last year.

There are about 15 shows in N.E. WI, and so far attendance has been soft. No sense of urgency on the part of the brides. The tickets range from FREE to $12/head. The $12/head shows seemed to be way down in attendance. The FREE shows did a little better.

Bookings are above average, but below last year's (awesome) numbers. EVERY year seems to be different than the last, so we can't predict how the year is shaping up until the end of March because 50% of the season is booked in the first three months. Four years ago, it was soft until the last three weeks in March when it blew the roof off with four times as many bookings during that span. Answer: Don't know yet. Hoping it's strong and steady.

8. There has been more lookin than bookin, but at least people know we're here - although that isn't putting food on the table. All in all, everything is pretty good. Oddly, we have been getting prom inquiries and orders. Not a lot of orders, but more than you would expect for January.
As far as bridal shows, we haven't done one in over a year. We used to do about four shows a year, but attendance just got smaller and smaller, so we stopped. It doesn't seem to have hurt.

9. Steve Anthony of Ducky’s Formalwear Moline and Dekalb IL reports attendance at the shows attended thus far to be good with MW pushing the free suit or tuxedo to keep. Bookings for the month of January to be slightly up between the two stores.

10. Diane Peters owner of Ducky’s Galesburg stated attendance was up at the local show with good traffic following the event. She offers special occasion dresses and has sold a good number. Bookings for the month were slightly down. The small town does not have an MW.

11. Jerry's Tux Shop, Las Vegas, NV reports new record attendance at area bridal shows. MW was pushing the free retail suit. Bookings for January were very good, but light so far for February.

12. How has attendance been at the show in your area?
We participate in many shows through out the southern US. This year we have noticed that most of our shows have a slight increase or are flat in attendance.

What were the "big boys" up to at the show ie: offering the brides and grooms?
Men’s Wearhouse offering a free suit with a wedding party of 10 or more. At select shows they were offering 25% off of each other tuxedo. We offered the bride a chance to win up to $45 off each tuxedo by spinning a wheel.

How are your wedding bookings for January? Looking great!
