IFA Winter Board Meeting
|
The International Formalwear Association’s Winter Board meeting took place on January 19, in Atlanta GA. This years meeting was different, in the fact that a gathering of 3 formal wear organizations each holding their respective winter/spring gatherings in the same location. SIFA, SAVVI, and IFA members were each given their respective space to hold their meetings. The opportunity to come together and share ideas over a cocktail or dinner in the evenings with manufacturers and operators of all sizes is one of the most important parts of these types of gatherings. The fragmentation of an industry now battling two giant competitors is disheartening to many operators large and small. Not sure a resolution is yet in site, but MANY would like to see more cooperative efforts while some prefer to retain their individualism. We continue to offer and hope the coming months sees change in that direction. Is this not all about those two big guys’ verses the rest of us now???
A cocktail party hosted by SIFA was held Monday night. The discussion always goes when a gathering of “formalwear” people to wedding bookings, and this gathering was no different. Operators from the SIFA organization which cover a large part of the south and eastern part of the country had good things to say about bridal show turnout and bookings so far this month. The members of the IFA board come from California, Oregon, Iowa, Illinois, Florida, Colorado, and Minnesota confirmed the same opinion. Any chance you have in a room of people with like interests to share ideas is invaluable. SAVVI members from all across the country also seemed very optimistic about future business. It was good to hear so many say bookings at least are UP!
The board meeting took place all day Tuesday. It never ceases to amaze me sitting in the presence of manufacturers and specialists of all sizes, that each of these 12 people uses their own time and money for the betterment of an industry. Every one of them had their own business to attend to back home, but took time out to be there. The discussions were lively and big things are in the works!
First order of business was website changes. Rob Weems of JDI Internet Services, the webmaster for our site, was a guest to discuss optimizing both the formalwear.org consumer site and the formal times newsletter site. He explained the site had received over 400 hits in just the previous 5 days. His enthusiasm for what could be done with both is exciting! Watch for it.
Membership information was discussed with comparisons to present and past member numbers. Due structures were changed to offer manufacturers free ads in the newsletter as part of their membership. More details to follow. Two board members terms will be done this year and discussion on possible candidates followed. Are you interested in being on the board?????
The upcoming EXPO 29 was the major topic of discussion. Again, operators of all sizes and manufacturers are present to offer opinions on when and where this event should take place. Timing is always an issue especially for smaller operators who can not leave their stores during busier season. All the angles were discussed THOROUGHLY and each date presented gone over for pros and cons to everyone. The expected resolution did not come, when another date and location was brought up to offer greater value for the members attending. Brian Glasgow of Glasgow and Associates our event planner needed to confirm numbers and availability for this new date and place as it had not been previously researched. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until next issue for all the complete exciting details.
Member benefits are always a BIG subject, and this meeting was no different. This group continually works to offer a greater significance for the membership price every year. A big announcement is in the works for a new value to ALL members. Financial advisor Wayne Griner presented an opportunity to raise member awareness that was so exciting and new that it keeps the future pretty interesting!! Watch for it…. The meeting wrapped up in early evening with assignments for all present for continued research on improvement in every area of discussion.
SAVVI hosted with sponsorship by manufacturers and the groups alike a dinner on Tuesday evening. The event was attended by 92 people from SAVVI, SIFA, and IFA members and all manufacturers in attendance. It was another great opportunity to mingle among so many great minds and listen to stories about the good old days and opportunities for the future. It was an excellent culmination of all the hard work of the people involved in bringing these 3 groups together. Thank you to ALL! A special mention to Trish Costanza SIFA president on all of her efforts and continued support towards unity can not be left out!

Member News:
The Earthquake in Hati a week ago has wrenched the hearts of everyone throughout the world. The continued stories of loss and devastation are unfathomable for most of us. It is hard to imagine life every returning to normal. On a formal wear note Fabian Coture has a factory in Hati and was able to find out Tuesday finally, that the factory was still standing and unaffected. Ken Hall said “We are truly thankful to know everyone is ok. Amazingly the people want to get back to work; they want to keep moving forward in their lives.”
California Earthquake:
Also, the much smaller earthquake in Eureka CA earlier this month shook up one of our fellow formal wear members. Rob Benbrook owner of Tuxedo Den and father of past president Rod Benbrook reported being shaken up but without any major damage. “Here in Eureka we are movers and shakers. Most of us still have our sea legs. Helps us to walk when the earth is doing its dance. Damage here is relatively light. My store lost two windows, small ones. Got a few cracks in the sheet rock, all easily repaired. Stores around town had an awful lot of shelves emptied. What a mess for them!” Pictures can be seen on www.times-standard.com
Big National Tuxedo News:
Joseph A Bank to Add Tuxedo Rentals
As reported January 7, 2010 WWD The Retailers Daily Newspaper: Jos A. Bank Clothiers INC. fired the first salvo of 2010 against its rival, The Men’s Wearhouse Inc. revealing last Wednesday that it will enter the tuxedo rental business.
The Hampstead, MD based Jos. A Bank will dip its toe into the business this month with a test initiative in about 5 percent of its doors. The business will then be expanded to more than half the firm’s 474 stores this spring.
“Our customers have asked us for this service,” said R. Neal Black, president and chief executive officer. “Although we are a national leader in the sales of tuxedos, we have not offered the specific formalwear products and services that are most commonly used by wedding parties and these products complete our formal assortment. We are continually looking for ways to expand sales and offer our customers ‘one stop’ shopping. There are very few national companies in this business and with over 4.9 million customers in our database, this business offers a significant opportunity for the company.”
The most significant competitor is Men’s Wearhouse, which has been aggressively pursuing tuxedo rentals for several years, a move that culminated in the purchase of the After Hours formalwear chain in 2007. The tuxedo rental business has proven to be a lucrative one for the retailer, representing 21.1 percent of the company’s sales of $462 million in the fiscal third quarter, ended Oct. 31. In its third-quarter conference call in December, Men’s Wearhouse said it has rented three million tuxedos in 2009. It offers tuxedo rentals at its Men’s Wearhouse, Moores, K&G and MWTux (formerly After Hours) stores.
Black said he believes rentals can reach the same level of performance at Jos. A. Bank in the future. “I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be just as big,” he said, noting there’s room for “another big national player even without taking market share from them.”
One difference between the approach of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A Bank is that the latter has “partnered with a national distributor who will own the inventory and deliver the orders to our stores, thus reducing the required investment and risk associated with starting up a new operation,” said David Ullman, chief financial officers of Jos. A. Bank. “With this structure, we expect that the incremental sales volume will add to the operating margins of the stores segment, although the gross profit rate will be lower that we achieve with our merchandise sales. Also, the tuxedo rental business has the potential to generate significantly higher gross margins if we choose to invest in our own infrastructure in the future.”

David’s Bridal New Colors
|
|
David’s Bridal is showing new colors for the independent tuxedo specialist to keep up with. Guava, Pistachio, Kelly.
Click here to see what you need.
In looking around the site, it is easy to see what colors they are pushing. Also the links to our competition are all over those pages. Knowing what is being offered can sometimes be half the battle.
TIP: David’s Bridal sells samples approximately 3X4 inches attached to a white card with color information on the top of every color they offer in their stores for $1 each. The store I work in uses a hole punch and a large metal ring to contain all of the colors together. When a bride discusses the fact she is using a David’s color, bringing out that ring with the samples of all of the colors increases their perception of being prepared. The newest colors may take a bit to be available, but a quick phone call to the store should keep you updated on when they will be.
