Did you receive a call this past week about membership in the association?
Two of the board members volunteered a couple of days to work on gathering information from our members. Although we have not yet started promotion, the measurement system is up and running. We need to make sure all of the phone numbers, addresses, and especially email we have on file for your organization is correct. If you have not yet renewed your membership now is the time!
We have two new exciting benefits for the 2010/2011 fiscal year. The measurement form as mentioned above will be on our consumer site: www.formalwear.org Your customers can download and print the form to take in to their local store to be measured. Visit the site and take a look at the form, we had a group of volunteers help set it up. We wanted to make it simple, yet be sure it contained all the pertinent information. The consumer will then be able to submit the measurements online.
The other great new benefit set to roll out this fall will be an I Phone App. I phone users all over the country will have the ability to purchase the app which will have manufacturers pictures of tuxedo styles and through GPS capability will direct them to your store as listed on the IFA store locator. We will have more details in the next couple of months.
Your membership gives you admittance to the upcoming expo September 11-13 at the Rio in Las Vegas for two people at no additional charge. We are excited about this opportunity to see how aligning with the bridal show works for all members. The hope is it will give members an expanded opportunity to see vendors plus, see colors and trends in bridal the driving force behind our industry. The Expo is now less than 2 ½ months away. Be sure and send/fax in your registration form. The form is available under Expo attendee information on the www.formaltimes.com site. Even if the price of who is attending is included in your membership, we need to have an idea who will be attending for the educational seminars.
This newsletter also one of your member benefits continues to work to keep you up to date with industry happenings. Our goal is to help each other by providing members the opportunity to gain and share information to help earn a living in the formal wear industry. The wants and offerings are available for members to buy hard to find items or sell stock you no longer need. Always feel free to contact us if you have questions or comments. The email address is editor@formaltimes.com.
Feel free to contact us with any questions 309-721-5450 and you can download a renewal form here. We look forward to hearing from you!

What would the perfect rental shoe be? How much would it weigh? What changes would there be from the current models available? Shoes can be one of the great profit margin items in tuxedo rental stores. Yet, they can also cause great customer complaint.
Shoes have long been known to generate a good return on investment for all size rental companies. A pair of shoes purchased for $20+ could be rented for that initial price the first time then depending upon style a range of 15-50+ times bringing a solid profit back to the store. A member recently shared his thoughts on what he felt the tuxedo shoe needed changed:
Less Weight (goes with comfort but also saves big in transportation costs)
Large -Bold - Easy to read Size# on the Bottom! The customer cares about the style and comfort - not the bottom; we need to be able to read quickly and accurately the size and width of the shoes. This would help eliminate mixed pairs and make pulling and confirming orders a smoother process.
I asked 3 of the industry suppliers and they were all happy to offer their explanations to the above concerns and give us some insight on the future:
BARCLAY SHOE CO.
- What is your comment to a members discussion on making the size larger on the bottom of the shoe? A few of years ago, Squires in Louisiana asked us to increase the type point of the size and width on our outsoles and we did so.
- Do you put the grooves in the bottoms of the shoes for purpose or looks? In the retail segment of Rocky’s business, the outsole design is an important part of the style of the footwear. We learned our lesson on this with the “Selecter” The style rented very well for years (and in some areas, still does) but the detailing on the lug outsole, which was part the style of the shoe that helps make the product rent, was difficult to clean. All of our new styles use the plainer, Radio City type outsole design, which provides a roughened area at the ball but is easy to clean.

- What are your feelings about the members opposition to the heavy clunky shoes? We are working on that now, In late July, ask you sales rep or see us at the Show!
- What are your newest styles? Same as above!!!
- What is your top seller? In no particular order, FLOW “Jet”, AFTER SIX ”Radio City”, BARCLAY “President” (see above picture). We also make a stand-out style for FCGI called the “Lexington”
- What styles were a surprise to you in the past? Brown “Tyler”, the “Selecter”, and, a long time ago, the “Perf Wing Tip, Kiltie, Tassel” Slip On. That one was the first rental fashion shoe, and as it’s name implies, it had everything on it but the kitchen sink, but it rented.
- What general comments would you like to add about rental shoes and our industry? Buy more of these!! Seriously, everyone knows the footwear segment is a good investment.

Gateway Shoes
- What is your comment to a members discussion on making the size larger on the bottom of the shoe?It is bad enough that the shoe size is on the bottom at all. We have heard many brides and MOBs complain it makes them look like bowling shoes that way. In this instance, bigger is NOT better.
- Do you put the grooves in the bottoms of the shoes for purpose or looks? We have some styles that are smooth on the bottom, but the function of the grooves is traction. Imagine a wet spot on the dance floor with a smooth sole and you can see the inherent issue. Most end users are accustomed to having some type of traction on the soles of their shoes and therefore do not expect their formalwear rental shoes to be “slippery”.

- What are your feelings about the members opposition to the heavy clunky shoes? Weight of the footwear is directly proportional sturdiness. The formalwear specialist relies on the number of turns they can get with each of their inventory investments; this applies to shoes as well. If we were to strip the weight out of the shoe, they would not get near as many turns and thus less profits.
- What are your newest styles? Our new style of modified square toe, proudly Made in the USA is attached. We feature this shoe in black, white and ivory patent. As well as black napa.
- What is your top seller? The basics are still king. Our jazz oxfords in all colors and sizes.
- What styles were a surprise to you in the past? There have been some pretty wild slip-ons offered.
- What general comments would you like to add about rental shoes and our industry? If handled properly, shoes are THE MOST PROFITABLE portion of the business. Try not to get too caught up in the style or brand game when it comes to footwear; we have never been told that a customer lost a rental because they did not have the right shoes. There is certainly marketing opportunity with a variety of shoes, but in today’s economic climate, we suggest that you offer your customer the variety they desire with retail shoes and avoid carrying inventories of shoes with fashion deadlines on them.
We also encourage you to vote with your dollars and support American workers in all your purchasing. Gateway has vendors we use in 25 different states, with your purchase of Gateway Shoes, there is a very good chance you are helping your own state’s economy; which means you are helping YOUR customer as well. Complete the circle …. Buy American.

Frederico Leone Ltd.
- What is your comment to a members discussion on making the size larger on the bottom of the shoe? We made that change 3 years ago after several customers made the suggestion.
- Do you put the grooves in the bottoms of the shoes for purpose or looks? Traction and sturdiness. A flat soul doesn't provide for much steadiness especially on a wet surface or incline. The texture of our shoes are also designed so they are easier to clean.

- What are your feelings about the members opposition to the heavy clunky shoes? We agree! Clunky shoes do not impress buyers. Our shoes are designed with currernt fashion in mind and the success of our Newport and Cosmopolitan shoes proves this point. Heavier shoes can be perceived as longer lasting but that is just not reality.
- What are your newest styles? Our newest style is the "Newport" Slip-on.
- What is your top seller? Our Plain-Toe Basic shoe, "Genoa", is still our number one volume shoe. However, our chisel-toe Cosmoploitan has increased by over 40% of last years volume! A clear sign that our customers value fashion looks.
- What styles were a surprise to you in the past? The Newport(above on right) is a record holder for our company. No shoe in the company's history has ever sold as many units in its first year as our stylish slip-on. The Cosmo and Dinero, both chisel-toe fashion shoes, had great opening years and Cosmo is still going strong but the Newport is in a class of its own.
- What general comments would you like to add about rental shoes and our industry?
1) Your customers VALUE fashion. What we have seen from our sales and heard from many of our retailers is that their customers are demanding fashion. You always need to carry a basic shoe but don't lose out by not offering your customer the style they want.
2) Remember when you are preparing your buying budget this year that shoes are the NUMBER ONE item for Return On Investment. Proper care and handling of your shoe inventory can greatly affect your bottom line.

NEWS RELEASE
Date: June 17, 2010
Company: AFTER SIX, LLC
Release Date: Immediate
LITHIA SPRINGS, GA---Robert M. Kollar, President and CEO of AFTER SIX, LLC, sadly announces that after 31 years of dedicated service to After Six and Raffinati, Bobby Lucarelli has decided to retire from the formal wear industry.
"It has been a pleasure knowing Bobby Lucarelli for the short time that we have been together at After Six. Bobby leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination and exceptional salesmanship," said Robert Kollar.
Bobby Lucarelli began in the formal wear business over 31 years ago, and will say goodbye to his long- time passion on June 30, 2010. He served as the West Coast Sales Representative for 28 years and as the National Key Accounts Manager for two years. Bobby has spent the last several months training the After Six sales staff to carry his torch and allowing others in the After Six family to benefit from sharing in his immense industry knowledge.
After Six wishes Bobby a heartfelt, reluctant farewell wishing him all the best as he and his wife, Daria, begin smelling the roses in Palm Springs and enjoying their summer months in Santa Barbara.
marci.steele@aftersix.com • After Six
Bobby had this to add about his life in the industry:
My clothing career started in Southern California in 1973 working for a young mens chain called Lord Rebel Industries. I Left in 75 to open 2 Luca-rellis Jean shop in Toluca Lake Ca with my brother Jack. Started working for Bob Bennett in 1978 selling Suits and Sport Coats as Raffinati. When we started in F/W in 83' I was Bennett's first full time F/W rep only testing the water in the West while Bob concentrated on the rest of the country. Our first line consisted of a black notch and peak, a white dinner jacket and a black tail coat. My first day out John Dazurko with Formal Night "now of Friar Tux" gave me a GREAT order and I never looked back. Bennett developed the Silver Shadow in 86' and from there it was so much fun. Park Ave, Oscar De la Renta, Dimension, Contour, Renaissance, Rainbow, La Vida, La Strada. As you can see I sold some winners! With so many good people behind me through the years like Bob and Gurdy Bennett, Monroe Wienstock, John Galante, Kathy Peskinns, Cecil Wimbs, Andy Senisi, Bill Hines, Stacey Dollar, Sarah Hemphill, Eric Plott, Ed Murphy, Larry Darnell, Ken Marion, words cannot express how much I appreciate your help and guidance. I will always be grateful. My whole career has been based around YOU, my customer and now almost 64, I truly am sailing off into the Sunset. Palm Springs in the winter, Santa Barbara in the summer and Lake Havasu in between. THANK YOU EVERYBODY I WAS INVOLVED WITH IN THE INDUSTRY. I hope I lived up to your expectations because truly that was my intention.
Thank You from the bottom of my heart
Good Luck to everyone
Bobby Lucarelli.
